Dr. Jin Zhang | Pipeline Engineering | Best Researcher Award
Postdoctoral Researcher | University of Calgary | Canada
Dr. Jin Zhang is a doctoral researcher in Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering at the University of Calgary, specializing in pipeline integrity, hydrogen transport safety, and multi-physics modeling. He holds a Ph.D. (in progress) focusing on hydrogen atom diffusion and distribution at surface defects on pipelines, an M.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering from the China University of Petroleum (Beijing), and a B.Eng. in Oil & Gas Storage and Transportation Engineering from Changzhou University, where he graduated top of his class. His research integrates finite element modeling, fracture mechanics, and experimental validation to address hydrogen embrittlement, stress–strain behavior, and structural integrity of aged pipelines, with applications for hydrogen repurposing and natural gas transport. He has developed predictive models for hydrogen atom diffusion at dents, corrosion defects, and crack tips under fluctuating pressures, contributing to safer energy infrastructure. Zhang has published extensively, including in the International Journal of Hydrogen Energy, Journal of Cleaner Production, International Journal of Pressure Vessels and Piping, and Geoenergy Science and Engineering. His work also includes co-developing a double-rectangle simplification method to improve burst pressure prediction of corroded pipelines. He has been recognized with the University of Calgary Research Excellence Award, International Graduate Tuition Award, First Prize at the China Ocean Engineering Design Competition, and multiple national-level scholarships and mathematics competition prizes. He has 56 citations, 10 publications with an h-index of 4.
